Abstract

The expert committee consisting of members of the Reale Accademia d’Italia (R.A.I.) visited Split and Salona in autumn 1941. On the basis of discovered archive documents, the paper presents the preparatory works and the course of the mission. Suggestions of the Academicians
taking part, and their results, were analyzed considering the political and cultural background of this and the other side of the Adriatic. The end of the paper brings subsequent critic interpretations of reports submitted by the president of the ad hoc committee Gustavo
Giovannoni, published in Rome in March 1942.
