The Library Doors Wide Open Project
Sažetak
Since 2007 Zagreb City Libraries have been conducting the project The Library Doors Wide Open, with the goal to promote reading and life-long learning, as well as social inclusion of children with developmental disabilities and physically handicapped young people.
The project includes:
1. Play session - Storytelling – Imaginative session : the program for including children with hearing impairment, speech impairment, reading and writing difficulties into regular programs of the library, and giving support to their parents, teachers and educators;
2. Creative workshops and cultural events : art workshops, exhibitions of their works, literary meetings, performing plays for children with developmental disabilities, young people and young adults with mental impairment, and physical handicaps;
3. Musical educational meetings for the blind and partially sighted children and young people, which include lectures, occasional concerts, talks with artists, learning about instruments through the sense of touch, education as well as encouragement to use computers for the blind users with special equipment – speech unit, screen reader and Braille line;
4. Hand-making of tactile picture-books for the blind and partially sighted children, and enabling the children with good eyesight to better understand the difficulties of people with special needs.
In 2007 the Library Doors Wide Open project won the second prize at the ERSTE Foundation Contest for Social Integration in Central and South Eastern European countries.
