Sažetak
The aim of this research was to examine differences in self-concept among students of different academic achievement, gender and type of school they attend, as well as to examine the structure of self-concepts of students of different academic achievement. Participants were 308 second grade high school students from Zagreb, mean age of 16 years. According to achievement, the participants were divided into three groups: “low academic achievement” which consisted of students who were retained in 2nd grade or failed some final grade exams (N = 89), “medium academic achievement” which consisted of students who finished 2nd grade with marks C or D (N = 82), and “high academic achievement” which consisted of students who finished 2nd grade with marks A or B (N = 137). Data were collected using the adapted Harter’s (1985) Self-Perception Profile (Brajša-Žganec et al., 2000) which is composed of subscales assessing Global self-esteem, School Competence, Social Acceptance, Athletic Competence, Physical Appearance and Behavioral Conduct. The results show that high academic achievers assess themselves better on School Competence than low and medium achievers, and that the low achievers assess their Behavioral Conduct lower than the other two groups of students. Gender differences were found on dimensions of Behavioral Conduct (girls assess themselves higher than boys) and Athletic Competence and Physical Appearance (boys assess themselves higher than girls). Type of school in interaction with academic achievement was a significant factor for some School Competence and Physical Appearance. The differences in structures of self-concepts were found among students of different academic achievement.
