Students and Values in Austria and Croatia

Sažetak

The paper presents the results of the research Students and Values in Austria and Croatia, which give us an insight into the civil society and personal values of the respondents. The research conducted among the students of the University of Rijeka and those of the Alpe-Adria University of Klagenfurt, Austria 7 (N = 1614) examined the students’ attitudes to the values of a modern democratic society and their trust in the institutions of that society. Supposing there are universal values and supposing people have a universal attitude to those values, the research aimed to discover whether there are values in a modern democratic society held by both groups of students (those of the University of Rijeka and those of the University of Klagenfurt) by revealing their attitudes to those values. The research covered the student population because they are likely to make decisions with long-term effects in their future business life and scientific work, considering their level of education. As (academic) citizens they also have a moral responsibility to the society and people they live and work with. The research was conducted using a survey. A questionnaire with 25 open and closed questions was designed for the purposes of the research. The questions given to the respondents are a selection of questions professor Ronald Inglehart developed for the purposes of the World Value Survey 8 . The data were processed using percentage distribution methods, variance analysis, factor analysis (under the GK criterion to constrain rotation), regression analysis, Chi-square and bivariate correlation (Pearson’s coefficient).
