Sažetak

The first preserved census of the island of Hvar from 1673 was taken in order to distribute salt according to the number of family members. It was taken in each place with a separate enumeration of the so-called newcomers settled on the island of Hvar during 17th century while fleeing from the invalding Turks from the Makarska littoral and its hinterland. By sebmitting themselves to Venice they obtained certain privileges and some land to cultivate.
According to this census the island had 17 settlements with 5570 inhabitants in 1216 families and 367 new settlers in 90 families. In addition to the number of inhabitants the census reveals also their surnames, the size of individual families, individual professions and other data important for the history of the island of Hvar of the period.
