Sažetak

Since the register of births, marriages and deaths was introduced all people have retained their Cristian names and surnames until death. Although the registers of those born at Grohote were introduced 450 years ago there are still people who are better known for their nicknames than names. This gives evidence to the age-old custom of denoting people after some distinctive trait or good quality like the American Indians used to do.
Clan nisknames have been kept for centuries since Roman times. Family nicknames have been kept for longer of shorter time, but the personal nickname has been stuck to the individual until his death.
The origin of the nicknames has its very deep basis: linguistic, psychological, historic, political, social, etc. It would be very useful to study this phenomenon in our small places, on islands in particular.
