Attitudes of Catechists in Croatia towards Differences in Classroom and Teaching

Sažetak
The first part of the paper presents the development of a con- cept of pedagogy that recognizes differences in relation to the pro- motion of social justice in and through education. On the basis of relevant literature one can see the extension of the idea of egalitarian difference beyond race, culture and nation to gender, social class, possibilities and capabilities, as well as to other differences that form the person’s identity. The author throws light upon ethical implica- tions of inclusive and exclusive philosophical and anthropological concepts included in pedagogical choices, in hidden curriculum and didactic components of education. At the same time the correlations with postmodern thinking become prominent as well as with speci- fic circumstances of Croatian society in transition. The role of reli- gious education in school is placed in the context of education that promotes differences as strengths.
Against this background in the following text the author presents the results of quantitative empiric research on the attitudes of catec- hists in Croatia to differences and inequalities in classroom and teaching. This is the first research on a representative sample which has included the catechists of all religious communities that hold religious education in schools throughout Croatia. The main finding of the research confirms that the respondents have a high level of culture in recognizing and respecting the differences and in promo- ting the values of inclusive and plural school and society. Yet, there are some shades that leave room for improvement and progress.
