Sažetak

The authors direct their research to regulatory work in the lower flow of the river Drava close to the Upper town of Osijek, and they analyse the circumstances which influenced the construction of the Winter harbour in Osijek in the last decade of the 19th century. The strengthening of the steamboat traffic on Drava necessitated regular and systematic regulation of the river in the area close to Osijek, and the Town administratio, influenced by the great district prefect, count Theodor Pejačević, concurrently planned the urgently required construction of the winter harbour. Based on archive sources kept in the State archives in Osijek, the authors follow the development of those works in the period from 1894 to 1898, including all obstacles, problems and numerous negotiations regarding construction of the Winter harbour until the final solution was defined. The Winter harbour was necessary in order for the Town administration to make order in accommodating vessels and administer control in charging fees for ships (chaikas, river barges) and vessels (boats, rafts, public beaches etc.) that occasionally used to be anchored along the coast of the upper Drava during sailing days, and during winter, when sailing along Drava river was not possible due to winter conditions, they remained anchored on that location. In the period of one year, from 1897 to 1898, the 600 m long Winter harbour was being constructed along with the construction of regulatory works on the right bank of the river Drava. Its construction also defined the construction of the granite cube road on the riverside. In this way the Winter harbour obtained the pier area of 26.000 m2, whereas the winter quarters were 460 m long. It could fit 4 large and 13 smaller ships, 17 vessels and 4 water-mills.
