Sažetak
Introduction: Improving and spreading health literacy is one of the leading health challenges of the 21st century as a means and the outcome of encouraging active inclusion of people in the care of their own health and the health of the community. The aim of this research was to determine the level of health literacy of students at the University of Split with regard to the type of study and the age and sex of the respondents.
Methods: 270 students from eight faculties of the University of Split participated in this research. The newly constructed questionnaire, as the measuring instrument used in this study, was tested by reliability measurement, where the values of the Cronbach’s alpha indicator suggest that the measuring instrument is valid and reliable. The calculation of descriptive statistical indicators included the calculation of the frequency and percentage values of all measurement variables and variables needed to describe the respondents. A t-test for independent samples was used to determine differences by sex and type of study, and a univariate analysis of ANOVA differences was used to determine differences by age and study program in male and female students. Post-hoc analysis of differences in the overall score between groups of subjects considering the students’ age expressed using the LSD Fisher test found no significant difference.
Results: The total percentage of correctly resolved answers is 68.36%. A significant difference was found between healthcare and non-healthcare study students, where healthcare study students showed a higher level of health literacy, while a significant difference considering the age and sex of the respondents was not found.
Conclusion: Students of the University of Split show a satisfactory level of health literacy. However, the result is significantly influenced by the knowledge of students of healthcare studies (Faculty of Medicine, Health Studies). Due to the importance of developing health literacy as a form of health improvement, better health education of young people is needed.
