Sažetak
The paper focuses on one of the non-finite verb forms in Italian, French and Macedonian
– the gerund. Although all three languages have the gerund, there are some differences
in the verb systems of these languages. The paper aims to identify some convergent
and divergent aspects of the three verb systems through the analysis of Macedonian
equivalents of the Italian and French gerund in some types of adverbial clauses. The
contrastive analysis is based on pairs of examples taken from Italian and French literary
texts and their translations into Macedonian. The results suggest that in some cases the
gerund is translated into Macedonian with the same verb form, while in others, for various
reasons, the equivalent is a subordinate clause with a finite verb form or other structures.
The paper also deals with the implications for teaching these asymmetries between the
languages in question.
