Abstract

The paper presents Vatroslav Jagić seen through the eyes of Eduard Hercigonja.
Hercigonja's texts are analyzed: Jagić i počeci hrvatske književne historiografije,
Vatroslav Jagić – povjesnik hrvatske glagoljske književnosti, Paleoslavistika, cyrilo-
methodiana, glagolitika i književna medijevistika u djelu Vatroslava Jagića.
In his other works, Hercigonja, as a comparative analysis shows, additionally
strengthened what he wrote down in his scientific works mentioned above. Jagić's
activities in Hercigonja's text were particularly confirmed in the books: Historija
književnosti naroda hrvatskoga i srpskoga – staro doba od sedmoga do konca četrnaestoga
vieka (1867) and Povijesti hrvatske književnosti (1913), written in a period of less than half a century, in which he contributed two significantly different
methods of analysis of Croatian medieval literature. Such a presentation gives the
reader an insight into Jagić's thoughts on Croatian Glagolitic literature, and on the
other hand gives an insight into Hercigonja's understanding of Jagić's activities.
The work tries to show what Hercigonja Jagić resented, and what Jagić specifically
charged him with.
