Sažetak
This article examines Jacques Maritain’s sustained and evolving critique of Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel during the American period of Maritain’s intellectual career (1940–1960). It argues that Maritain’s engagement with Hegel, far from diminishing in exile, becomes more comprehensive, systematic, and philosophically radical. While Maritain’s earlier, French-period critique of Hegel focused primarily on metaphysical and epistemological issues, his American writings extend this critique into political philosophy, the philosophy of history, moral philosophy, and cultural analysis. The article shows that Hegel functions for Maritain as a persistent negative horizon against which he articulates his Thomistic personalism, political humanism, and Christian philosophy of history. Hegel’s absolutisation of reason, his philosophy of history, and his conception of the State are interpreted by Maritain as foundational sources of modern immanentism, totalitarian political theory, and what he later describes as a “religion of history“. Through close analysis of Maritain’s major works written after 1940, the study reconstructs the internal coherence of this critique and its development across two phases: an initial focus on democracy, natural law, and the critique of the State, followed by a mature confrontation with Hegelian philosophy of history and rationalistic gnosticism. The article concludes that Maritain’s critique of Hegel constitutes a central axis of his American-period philosophy and plays a decisive role in shaping his defence of personal freedom, transcendence, and the limits of historical reason.
