Sažetak
Archaeothanatology, originally known as field anthropology, isa discipline that emerged in France in the 1970s and has sincegained significant recognition in English-speaking academiccontexts. It focuses on investigating the biological and socialdimensions of death in past populations by re-centring the deceasedwithin the interpretative framework. A central objectiveof archaeothanatology is the reconstruction of the funerary operationalsequence through the study of the deceased in theirgrave, taphonomic processes, the sequence of body disarticulation, and deviations and anomalies in the positioning of skeletalremains. This article revisits the fundamental principles of thediscipline, with particular emphasis on the importance of fieldbasedobservations in interpreting mortuary practices. Additionally,we propose a Croatian translation of key terminologicalconcepts specific to this precise approach to mortuary contexts, with the aim of fostering wider collaboration and comparisonsin the application of archaeothanatological methods in mortuarycontexts. This article is an initiative of the ARTHA network(ARchaeoTHAnatology Working Group for Central Europe, https://www.artha.at/) supported by the “Programme Hubert Curien(PHC) Amadeus ARTHA.
