Abstract
Metal containers, along with glass and paper, are traditional packaging materials. Due to a number of good characteristics (durability, impermeability, good barrier properties etc.) they are still widely used in food packaging. Furthermore, canned food can retain their original taste and nutritional values for several years. Due to possible interaction with the packaged contents, the inside of metal packaging must be protected in an appropriate manner. For this reason, the inner surfaces of the packaging are usually covered with special varnishes (protective coatings). The type, quality and quantity of the varnish applied are determined by the application, i.e. the characteristics (aggressiveness) of the food product. Like all materials and articles in contact with food, protective coatings are subject to safety legislation and must meet specific criteria, such as withstand the rigorous thermal conditions (e.g. sterilization) of food production.
