Sažetak

The author deals with the social role of Croatian media in the last two decades, by analyzing their positive and negative impacts. He particularly focuses on changes in the Croatian media scene from the beginning of “democratization” and the development of the Croatian media market until the decline of professionalism and loss of trust, trying to discover what caused them. The author concludes that the journalistic profession in Croatia is in some kind of a crisis and that the image of Croatian journalists is shaken, which is associated with a decline in the credibility of the Croatian media and subsequently in their circulation, or rather in the number of viewers, listeners and readers. The cause of this must be in the lack of capability by the media, as well as professional organizations to deal with the challenges brought primarily by the social transition in Croatia, during the collapse of communism, the war and the unstable democracy, and second by their commercialization and the race for profits, which were in turn slowed down by the global crisis and recession. As preconditions for overcoming the crisis and restoring the dignity and influence of journalism, the author mentions the following elements: higher level of education and literacy of journalists; compliance with the professional and ethical standards; refraining from manipulation and sensationalism; greater objectivity in reporting; the releasing of scrutinized, truthful, balanced, interesting and useful information; lesser influence of interest groups, owners and politics; the production of higher quality and socially useful content, and more of good and optimistic news... In fact, only professional, “healthy” and socially responsible media can develop and promote values, as well as inform, educate and entertain, preserve the national identity and pass on the cultural heritage.
