Sažetak

This study was undertaken to assess the merits of three sources of rapeseed protein concentrate, (RPC; undephytinazed, untreated control; undephytinazed, solvent treated control; dephytinazed) as partial or total replacement of steam - dried whole herring meal in a dry basal diet for rainbow trout. All diets had about 43 % protein, 18 % lipid and 3,9 kcal of metabolizable energy/g on a dry weight basis. The three RPC sources each comprised about 19,2, 38,9 and 58,9 % of dietary protein by replacement of 33,3%, 66,6% and 100 % of herring meal protein. The appetite enhancer Finnstim was included in all diets at 1,5 %. Each of 10 test diets was fed to duplicate groups of 74 - 77 trout (initial mean wt 4,3 g) held in 10 - 10,3 °C well water, with flow rate of 7,51/min on a natural photoperiod for 84 days. All groups were fed their prescribed diet by hand to satiation three times daily.
Rainbow trout growth rate, appetite, feed efficiency, mortality and health were not compromised when either the undephytinized control or dephytinized RPC sources were substituted for 66 % of the herring meal protein in the basal diet. Replacement of all the fish meal protein with each RPC source did not depress appetite, but did significantly reduce growth rate and feed efficiency. The procedure used to dephytinaze RPC significantly reduced the quality of the RPC so that the benefits of phytate removal were diminished. Strategies which may result in successful total replacement of fish meal by RPC in trout diets are provided.
