Sažetak This paper deals with morphological properties of Service tree (Sorbus domestica L.) fruits and seed, as well as with their relations. In autumn 2006 fruits were collected from two Service trees growing on different sites in Croatia. The fruit yield from both trees was estimated as partial. Fruits and seeds were weighed and measure in the Laboratory for Seed Testing at the Faculty of Forestry, University of Zagreb. We measured fruit length (FL), fruit width (FW) and their ratio (FL/FW), as well as seed length (SL), seed width (SW), seed diameter (SD) and the ratio (SL/SW). Fruit mass and seed mass were weighed on digital scales after which the number of filled seeds per fruit was counted. The statistical analysis helped us determine average values of the measured variables and their relations. No significant difference between trees was obtained for seed diameter and ratios FL/FW and SL/SW only. The FL/FW indices indicate that both trees have apple-shaped fruits, i.e. f. pomifera (Hayne) Rehd. Correlation analyses of both trees revealed a positive correlation (r=0,69 and 0,77) between fruit mass and seed mass, and between fruit mass and the number of filled seeds in a fruit (r=0,44 and r=0,64). The results of this research have a practical value and can be applied when selecting Service trees and collecting fruits for seedling production. We recommend selecting fruits on the basis of their size, as larger fruits give many more filled seeds with bigger absolute weight. This can result in higher vitality, i.e. better seed germination, better survival and bigger seedling heights in nurseries.
