Sažetak

Od uskarsa Isusova (On the Resurrection of Jesus) is regarded as one of Marulić's better lyric poems written in Croatian. Yet, it has so far passed unobserved that it represents a rather free paraphrase of the poem Ad Felicem episcopum de pascha (Carm. III, 9) written by sixth-century Latin poet, Venantius Fortunatus.
The Croatian poem follows the tripartite structure of its Latin model. In both poems the description of Spring, contained in the first part, is written in strict keeping with Classical precepts for describing the Seasons (ekphrasis chrónon). Like Fortunatus, Marulić cloths the arid rhetorical scheme in a sequence of inspired verse. Reducing the original description, he skillfully completes it with details of his own invention: enough to justify the view that apart from being a good connoisseur of tradition he was also a gif~ed author capable of creatively approaching the chosen model. The second part of Fortunatus's poem is chiefly an apostrophe to Jesus; it paraphrases certain formulations from the Nicene Creed, glorifies Our Savior Jesus Christ and describes his descent to the Underworld and his delivering of the souls of the righteous (the description partly relies on the apocryphal Gospel according to Nicodemus). Marulić is a man of great theological knowledge and a fervent believer. He follows the set model, often interweaving it with authentic verse and syntagmas; in this way he enriches the given context by precious personal experience. The third part of Fortunatus 's poem contains some laudatory verse dedicated to Felix, bishop of Nantes, for his merits in the baptizing of the heathens; Marulić, of course, omits this part and adds verse of his own, where he celebrates the spreading of Christianity throughout the World in the period following Christ's Resurrection and Assumption.
In his »poem based on a poem« Marulić employs different transformative procedures: abridgement, amplification, re-modelling, substitution. On three occasions he strives to render as accurate a translation as possible. Marulić's auctorial contribution is considerable and the poem is hallmarked by great poetic skill and maturity. To put it in the words of Quintilian: Our author is not a mere imitator; he is an aemulator and, as far as Croatian literary tradition is concerned, also an inventor. It was perfectly in line with the contemporary conception of poetics that the author of the Croatian version should sign the work with his own name: He adapted the Latin piece to the Croatian language, domestic versification system and literary tradition; he even adjusted it to the authorial context of his own oeuvre. What is most important, having chosen a Latin poem even today considered as anthological, he attested the reliability of his own aesthetic criteria and produced a new anthological piece.
