Abstracts
Early symptoms and late complications after treatment with the Gillies
et al. method in 55 patients with a fracture of the corpus or arch of the zygomatic borne, were analyzed. In a group of 35 patients with a fracture of the corpus of the zygomatic bone, impression was found in 68.6%, difficulty in opening the mouth in 57.1%, disturbed sensitivity in the infraorbital region in 45.7% and diplopia in 14.3%
of the examinees after injury. One to 10 years after repositioning, impression was present in 20%, difficulties in opening the mouth in 11.4%, disturbed sensitivity of the infraorbital region in 20% and diplopia in 2.8% of the formerly treated patients. In 20 examinees with an isolated fracture of the arch of the zygomatic bone, disturbed opening of the mouth was found in 70% and impression in 55% of the patieints after injury. The Gillies et al. method successfuilly removed the impression in all the patients and only 5 % of the examinees with a fractured arch had difficulty in opening the mouth after repositioning. The results showed that repositioning with the Gillies method is indicated for a fractured arch and for a moderately dislocated fracture of the corpus of the bone. The success of treatment partly depends on the duration of the interval between the injury and repositioning. Diplopia and difficulties in opening the mouth after repositioning require further surgery.
