[The crown edge]

A relationship between the crown edge on the hand, and the gingiva
and supporting tooth on the other hand, has been frequently discussed in terms of periodontium preservation, esthetics and caries prophylaxis. The success of fixed-prosthetic crown therapy primarily depends on appropriate treatment and appearance of the edge surface as well as on optimal adaptability of the crown, contributing to good hygienic conditions (in the mouth. In a series of experimental studies, attempts were made to improve the crown edge appearance and adaptability. The best results were obtained with the application of an over-cast platinum foil in the edge region. It can be concluded that a smooth and shiny surface of the crown edge rather than the material it is made of, a determining factor for the state of the gingiva.
