Sažetak

Since the end of the 11 th c., on the island of Vis, in the private-legal written documents the terminology regarding single pieces of land and island regions, pasture-grounds and coves have been registred. Throughout the centuries some of these names disappeared while some, formed by the Croatian idiom written in Latin and Italian orthography, have been preserved to these days. The oldest written origins on the island of Vis were registered in the private-legal documents since the 11th c., mostly connected with the Benedictine monks on the islet of Biševo, and then they referred to the whole island until the end of the 18th c. By mid-18th c. the St. Silvester’s church was built on Biševo and then donated to the Benedictine monastery on Tremiti in Apulia who founded there their monastery. In the Komiža cove St. Nichola’s church was registered in the 13th c. near which that monastery was relocated by the end of that century. The church itself was enlarged as required by the end of the 18th c. The monastery possessed lands in the cove under the monastery in Kostirna, Podhumlje and on Biševo cultivated by the local inhabitants, who erected hamlets by-and-by. The cultivated land on i. Vis was the property of the Hvar diocese, commune and the nobles, very little of the inhabitants. The most frequent cultures were: planting vines, growing carob, fig and lemon, and sowing wheat. In the preserved archive origins the names referring to single island regions, some of which are used even today, are recorded.
