ADVANTAGES OF INTRAVENOUS SYSTEMIC THROMBOLYSIS IN STROKE TREATMENT

Sažetak

Stroke treatment with intravenous thrombolysis using recombinant tissue-type plasminogen activator has been accepted and registered in Croatia since 2004. Its application started in clinical hospitals the same year. Today it is applied in most country hospitals with adequately equipped stroke units. Results of numerous studies showed that this therapy reduced disability and fatality rates in patients suffering from acute cerebral infarction in the middle cerebral artery area. More recently,thrombolysis is also applied for infarctions in the anterior and posterior cerebral artery area. Today, it is considered to be the only effective treatment of ischemic stroke if the patients are carefully selected according to the guidelines for
patients’ inclusion into the therapy.
