Sažetak
The prenatal and perinatal care of expectant mothers in Knin General Hospital for the 2000-2004 period is shown in this paper, as well as indicators of prenatal and perinatal outcomes. In this period, 1135 expectant mothers were controlled and treated. The largest amount of births in "Hrvatski ponos" Knin General Hospital was in the year 2000 (262), and the least number of births was in 2004 (194), which indicated that the number of births was decreasing. Most newborns (84.8%) weighed from 2,500-3,999 g. The least number of expectant mothers (0.5%) were not examined at all during their pregnancy, the largest number (46.2%) was examined 6-8 times, and a significant number (34.6%) was examined 9 or more times, including ultrasonic examination. The largest number of births (91.6%) were vaginal, then by Caesarean section (8.4%), and by vacuum extraction (0.4%); the birth of twins made up to 1.5%. Most newborns (84.8%) weighed from 2,500-3,999 g, and macrosomes counted 2.9%. Most mothers were released the fourth day following birth (81.4%), some of them were released after more than 4 days (16.7%), and 1.8% of newborn children were redirected to other health facilities. In this period fetal mortality was 3.9%, early neonatal mortality 1.6%, and perinatal mortality 6.17%.
Conclusion: In the Knin area and in "Hrvatski ponos" General Hospital, expert prenatal and perinatal health protection of expectant mothers and newborn children is well organized with good results, which can be compared to the organization of health protection in other medical centres in Croatia and in the world.
