Historiography contribution of Franjo Emanuel Hoško to the history of the continental Franciscan order of the 16th to the 18th century

Sažetak
The history of the continental Franciscan orders in the new age received its historiographic validation in the works of Franjo Emanuel Hoško. His many years of dedication to studying the history of the Franciscans on the Croatian mainland, with a special focus on the period from the 16th to 18th century created a comprehensive overview of the Franciscan pastoral, cultural, scientific and social activities in that period. With the beginning his research of the history of higher education, which is tied to the emergence of cultural circles around those schools and the creation of philosophical and theological determinants based on Scotism, this led to the establishment of a form of pluralism in the area in the 17th and 18th centuries. Through the activities of the communities of the orders, in this case the Franciscan order, during this period after a century of Ottoman wars, Croatia was again brought into the spiritual and intellectual trends of the European West. Hoško’s interest was primarily directed at the scientific evaluation of the Franciscan contribution to the Croatian sacral and national history in these centuries. His work was based on the study of three historical movements that marked the work of the Franciscans in continental Croatia during the new age – the Catholic revival, Baroque, and Josephinism. Hoško became an essential reference source for these issues and the leading expert for Josephinism and its consequences in Croatia.
