A PAINTING BY EBERHART KEILHAU-MONSU BERNARDO IN ZAGREB

Sažetak
The author attributes the painting The Allegory of Vanitas (private collection in Zagreb) to Eberhart Keilhau (Italian name Monsu Bernardo, 1624-1687), a Dane by origin, Rembrandt's student and painter of the Italian Seicento. Pointing out the similarities with Keilhau's paintings Old Woman Beginning Her Embroidery from the Museum in Serpukhov, Old Woman with Open Book and Embroidery Box (location unknown) and especially Old Woman Wrapped in a Striped Shawl in a private collection in Rome, the author shows that the Zagreb painting of The Allegory of Vanitas was painted in Venice about 1652-53, or before 1656, when Keilhau went to Rome. The proposal that Keilhau painted this picture is also supported by a comparison with the identical composition of the same format (72,5x97 cm) which M. Heimbürger, author of a monograph on the painter (Roma 1988) established to be a copy. The model for this copy was Keilhau's replica of the Zagreb painting.
