Sažetak Modern water management contains the requirements for determining the characteristics of basic river basin management units, including an overview of the impact of human activities on the water status. The differentiation between the impacts of point and diffuse sources of pollution is a particularly complex task. The paper describes in detail the water pollution loads and analyses typical methodological approaches to the control of pollution sources with the objective to reduce the impact on the water environment through the establishment and implementation of a comprehensive programme of measures. It emphasises the need to ensure the participation of different water users in the implementation of measures aimed at reducing the impact on the water environment, while taking into account the user / polluter pays principle as an incentive for users to use water resources efficiently.
