Tradition and Avant-Garde. Tradition and Novelty in Mystery for the Musical Scene Prazor by Contemporary Croatian Composer Ruben Radica

Sažetak
One of the main issues to be cleared up when defining the
content of the avant-garde concept is its relationship to the new.
In order for the avant-garde to justify its fundamental features, it
has to contain a new and yet unknown approach to music
matter. However, avant-garde new is a more specific term than
new as a permanent artistic category, and closer to the intolerant
nature of fashion, but does not coincide with the latter either.
Three general characteristics: activism, antagonism and nihilism,
can only partly be applied to musical avant-garde (only the best
achievements are considered, of course) which does not originate
from a destructive mood but is turned more towards changing
and deepening the viewpoints for. A valuable avant-garde work
of art always contains elements of tradition. Their coexistence
and inter-relationship is shown in the example of an extraordinary
musical piece – Mystery for the Musical Scene Prazor by
contemporary Croatian composer Ruben Radica. All great human
achievements circle around the meaning of life, in quest of
true values, criteria for distinguishing good from evil, their importance
not being in the answers they give but in the questions they
ask. Such a meaningful framework is found by Radica in the epic
poem Prazor by Jure Ka{telan. The musical origins of the work
contain elements of tradition and folklore, but the way of forming
and developing the musical structure gives it ultimately its
contemporary, radical expression. The sociological component of
Prazor lies in the choice of the theme, and is best expressed in
the composer's inscription: To the martyrdom of the chosen.
