Sažetak

Discussing the issue of shame the article points at the terms shame and embarrassment; starting from the linguistic use of the terms it wants to show what is understood by them and how they are essentially connected with our body, as well as with commu¬nity. In the analysis the article establishes a point of reference in the thoughts of Elias, Levinas and Smith. Experience and under¬standing of shame, on the level of analysis, can be thought through three paradigmatic periods: pre-modern, modern and post-modern period. With regard to the person’s physical identity, the work deals with the reality of human body, which is the outer expression of soul, and soul is the inner expression of body that is revealed thro¬ugh physical expressions. Having regard to the refinement of the body in interpersonal relationships and in human society, the paper particularly observes the idea of shame in totalitarianism. Looking at the role of shame in a social context which involves humbling, in totalitarian systems we can notice humiliation with the focus on the person’s humiliation.
