Sažetak
The effect of lead on the metabolism of tryptophane was investigated by determining the concentration of 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) as its metabolic endproduct excreted in urine. In a group of 50 workers engaged in the production of lead batteries the content of 5-HlAA in urine was determined. To establish the degree of exposure and lead absorption, the concentration of lead, delta-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) and coproporphyrin in urine, as well as the concentration of lead in the air of the working environment, were also determined. At the same time, these biological parameters were investigated in a group of healthy and non exposed persons. The results show that lead has a negative effect on the metabolism of tryptophane bringing about increased excretion·of its metabolite, 5-HIAA. This fact points to the possibility of practical use of this laboratory test, which could, together with·other tests (determination of lead, ALA, coproporphyrin) improve the work on the detection of occupational exposure to lead and the diagnosis of lead poisoning.
