Abstracts
In the education system of the Republic of Croatia, music teaching has been recognized as an important element in the cultural development of students through acquisition of musical competencies. Music has been taught as a separate subject at primary school level and it has been established as a separate entity in terms of both syllabus and didactics/methodology and has nothing in common with Music Appreciation taught in high schools. The two subjects have been developed separately focusing on increasing efficiency. At the beginning of the 21st century, teaching Music started to change resulting in openness regarding the syllabus and dominant activities. Unlike the developments in teaching Music, based on modern educational objectives, Music Appreciation in high schools, since their establishment until present day, has been taught according to a diachronic model firmly relying on traditional frameworks of the closed curriculum. The conducted research has established that Music Appreciation classes are mostly based on traditional didactic strategies including a teacher-centered instruction and oral presentation. The research results reveal an insufficient integration of ICT and active learning strategies in the process of teaching. The research has confirmed that it is necessary to make changes in teaching Music concerning didactic-methodological organisation of teaching and to adapt teaching techniques, forms and strategies to active learning.
