Sažetak

In recent years, the number of fires in the Split-Dalmatia County area has increased rapidly, especially in the summer. The fire may occur naturally (a stroke, a volcanic eruption) or intentional or unintentional human action. In addition to economic losses, a fire may cause people to be killed, animal and plant deaths, destruction of housing and economic facilities, as well as environmental pollution that surrounds us. For these reasons, it is very important to develop an efficient management and response system in such exceptional situations. The Copernicus program, developed within the European Union, helps us greatly. This paper reviews the Sentinel-2 satellite missions. The area around Split was selected, affected by a catastrophic fire in July 2017. A normalized index of flared vegetation was used as an indicator for assessing the condition and size of the affected area. Also, mapping of areas affected by fire as well as analysis of vegetation status before and after the fire were made.
