Sažetak

In this study the autors compared the effects of conservative treatment of background retinopathy to laser application. The experimental group consisted of 67 subjects (44 females and 23 males) at the average age of 57.4 years, whereas in the control group there were 73 subjects (54 females and 19 males) at the average age of 60.3 years. Members of both groups were equalized according to the principle of equivalent pairs, taking into account age, sex, type of diabetes and compensation of the basic disease. The patients in the experimental group were treated by focal extramacular, focal perifoveolar macular and the combined laser methods, whereas the patients in the control group received angioprotectors (calcium dobesylate) in combination with drugs effecting platelet aggregation (acetylsalicylic acid), vitamin C and/or vasodilatators (pentoxyphylinum). Efficiency of the treatment was evaluated at the beginning of the investigation and 18 months later by visual acuity examination ophthalmoscopy to assess retinal changes. Good success of treatment, i.e. improvement or stopping the disease progression was achieved by both methods;however, the success of treatment by laser application was significantly higher (P>0.001)20.
