Sažetak

The term stroke includes several different
manifestations, as subarachnoidal hemorrhage, intracerebral
hemorrhage, cerebral stroke and cerebral embolism. Opinions
about the connection of elevated concentration of cholesterol
and stroke are still controversial. Apart from the direct effect
and elevated concentration, atherosclerotic changes in the
cerebrovascular system can be influenced by other mechanisms,
i.e. by other lipids and/or their fractions. Hyperlipoproteinemia
is an important risk factor of cerebrovascular
disease, and lowering the level of lipid concentration lessens
the occurrence and mortality of stroke. Overall survival,
improving the quality of life, lessening the need for surgery
and diminishing the frequency of further strokes is most successfully
performed through strong primary and secondary
prevention.
