Sažetak

Continuing the studies of the effect of the a-substituent
upon the course of the Friedel-Crafts r eaction the behaviour of
a-unsubstituted B-benzylmercaptopropionyl chloride was described.
When one or two moles of a luminum bromide was used, the
main products were B-mercaptopropiophenone and B-benzylmercaptopropiophenone. Diphenylmethane was isolated in about 90°/o yield. With three moles of alumtnum bromide the ma~n product
obtained frnm the reaction mixture was B-mercaptopropiophenone
and no B- benzylmercaptopropiophenone could be isolated. The crude
products from the reaction with three moles of aluminum bromide
gave a high yield of 3,3'-thiodipropiophenone when treated with
aqueous a1nmonia at room temperature.
