Use of Risperidon in Children and Adolescents with Aggressive Behavior

Sažetak
Aggression can occur in many psychiatric
disorders in children including pervasive developmental disorders,
bipolar disorders, disruptive behavior disorders,
ADHD, and mental retardation. There have been many different
approaches to the treatment of aggressive behavior
symptoms. Nonpharmacological approaches include behavior
modification, psychotherapy, and cognitive and social
interventions. Pharmacological approaches include the use
of mood stabilizers and antipsychotics. Conventional neuroleptics
have been the most commonly prescribed drugs
for children and adolescents with aggressive behavior. However,
their use has been limited due to their side effects.
Risperidone is an atypical antipsychotic with dopamine and
serotonin antagonistic effects. Explorative studies in pediatric
population showed its beneficial effects on aggressive
behavior, while only a few extrapyramidal side effects. The
purpose of this review is to present the most recent information
about the use of risperidone in the management of
aggression in children and adolescents.
