Sažetak
Heavy metals can accumulate in beeswax for decades. In modern beekeeping is common practice to continuously recycle wax from old honeycombs to new honeycomb foundations. Beeswax samples were analysed by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GFAAS) for As and Cd, and using a mercury analyser for Hg. Samples of beeswax of known origin and stand age were taken during the production of beeswax foundations, using casting technology with a doubled prolonged cooling and sedimentation phase. Significant differences were determined in concentrations of Hg (P<0.05) between the different levels of wax in the double-walled steel casting container, especially between the “pured” wax levels used for production of comb foundations and dark wax sediment removed from processing. The obtained results confirm that applying the described method could effectively “wash” a significant amount of heavy metals from the initial material used for the production of new beeswax foundations.
