Sažetak

In the broad spectrum of the musical activities of distinguished Croatian musicologist Krešimir Kovačević (1913–1992), who was a music writer, critic, teacher, conductor and, among other things, Editor-in-Chief of the Croatian Musicological Review Arti musices (1973–79) – his lexicographical work is generally known, but still not fully recognised although his lexicographical opus as an author and editor in terms of range and quantity is the biggest in Croatian musical lexicography in the second half of the 20th century. His most significant lexicographical contribution was as the chief editor of the second edition of the Music Encyclopaedia (3 volumes, 1971–77) as well as the Lexicon of Yugoslav Music (Leksikon jugoslavenske muzike, 2 volumes, 1984) both published by Institute of Lexicography in Zagreb. This paper is focused on the Lexicon of Yugoslav Music as the example of his lexicographical work as the chief editor and writer. The method used for this focus was to look from »inside« and the aim was to study and to follow the stages in the process of the construction of the Lexicon. So, it is not the Lexicon itself which is under analysis but the manuscript of the »abecedarium«, i. e. index of entries (Abecedar natuknica) for the Lexicon as well as other documents found in the archives of The Miroslav Krleža Institute of Lexicography in Zagreb. An analysis of the »abecedarium«, which has multiple layers of handwritten notes revealed some of Kovačević’s interventions and decisions as chief editor such as, his annulments of certain numbers of the originally planned entries as well as bringing new entries onto the list, introducing a specific kind of entry (short articles about individual pieces of music), joining small entries together to cover the bigger topics and selecting cross-references. Considering the fact that articles in this Lexicon are unsigned, the other goal of this paper is to detect Kovačević’s contribution as author and for the first time to compile a list of his articles. With regard to the »abecedarium«, although it contains the names of the contributors of the articles, it has been revealed as an unreliable source for establishing this list because of its inconsistencies in listing Kovačević sometimes as the author, and sometimes as the editor of a specific article. It was therefore necessary to use the method of comparison of the signed articles in the 2nd edition of the Music Encyclopaedia with the same entries in the Lexicon of Yugoslav Music. The result of this comparison created not only a more accurate list of Kovačević’s articles in the Lexicon, but also resulted in the discovery that there are many articles (by him and other authors) that were copied or transferred from the Music Encyclopaedia (some changed to a lesser or greater extent). Despite this, the list of his articles is impressive and unexpectedly large – 829 articles with 20,730 lines in total (a full one-sixth of the Lexicon). These articles range in size from 2 lines up to 1,550 lines, covering such diverse topics as biography, articles about the individual music pieces as well as entries about various ensembles, institutions, festivals, music societies and cities. In conclusion, this »inside view« reveals Kovačević’s vast personal engagement and enthusiasm to complete this Lexicon, which, despite some imperfections, still stands as a valuable source of information pertaining to Croatian musical history.
