Scenic Language of Marin Držić and Theatre Heritage of Dubrovnik

Sažetak

Literary and historical researches have shown that before Marin Držić — the exceptional figure of the Renaissance Croatian Comediography — there existed a distinctive theatre activity that the author based his work on. From the linguistic point of view it can be spoken of the fact that Držić’s precursors examined and prepared main linguistic processes which could flow in Držić’s comedies into true fireworks of language and style effects — the essential components of his expression.
The scenic language in old Dubrovnik was being formed continuously during the period from Džore Držić, through the Vetranović group, to Marin Držić. The proportions of the urban and rural in the language choice (for example, in the eclogue about Radmio and Ljubmir by Džore Držić), then the acceptance of the urban spoken language, and the use of aloglottic elements (in some works of the Vetranović group: masquerades and comedies in verses) were particularly solved in that period. It can be proved then that by the appearance of Marin Držić (i. e. by 1548) almost all the most important language and style processes had been investigated and applied to scenic works. Marin Držić could easily find it useful. In the light of that language development the Držić’s exceptional skilfulness in using the language has become much more understandable.
