The effect of citrus fennel aroma on the daily intake of apple pomace fed to dry cows in the cow-calf system

Apple pomace, a by-product in apple, juice, wine, brandy or vinegar processing could be fed to dry cows in the cow-calf system. According to literature, apple pomace could replace 1/3 of the daily ration for ruminants, especially growing cattle and/or dry beef/dual purpose breed cows in the cow-calf system. According to its high metabolic energy (ME), low protein and moderate fibre content, apple pomace is more of a low-grade energy concentrate or moderate quality hay.
The aim of the experiment was to determine the effect of aroma supplement on daily apple pomace ad libitum intake of dry cows in the cow-calf system. The experiment lasted 30 days. It was designed as a tertian latin square with two treatments, two groups of 12 cows and two 15-day periods (5-day adaptation and 10-day measurement period).
There was no statistically significant difference in the intake of fresh apple pomace fed with or without aroma supplement (27.5 and 26.9 kg daily per cow respectively) or in dry matter intake (4,84 and 4.61 kg respectively) (P>0.05). As a positive effect of aroma supplement a reduced variability in daily intake was observed.
