Sažetak
Simultaneous to selection of cows for high milk production, necessary alterations in their environment were made. However, a question is raised to what extent breeding environment exceeds the limit of the animals ability to adapt, which again raises some problems concerning cows welfare, as well as the profitability of the total production. Cows are social animals which live in hierarchically organized social communities. Intensive production brings changes to their social structure. However, cows have kept certain behavioural characteristics which are important in the context of welfare and which have to be considered when organizing breeding. Independently of the keeping system, adequate zoohygienic housing conditions have to be ensured for the cows, and particular attention should be paid to cubicle comfort. Systematically planned program of nutrition is a part of every production. Therefore, when composing meals, it is necessary to consider physiological characteristics of cows as ruminants and their specific nutritional requirements with the aim of achieving high milk production. Nowadays, mastitises are considered a major problem in the welfare of dairy cows, and a group of economically most important diseases in intensive production, causing premature culling of cows. Mastitis prevention is based on proper udder hygiene, together with regular hygiene and control of milking devices. Laminitises are another important problem of dairy cow welfare. Reasons for their occurence are primarily inadequate housing conditions and inadequate care of animals, especially their hooves. Basic measure for their treatment is an early diagnosis of sick condition. Dairy cows require adequate environment, which will ensure optimal conditions for their physiological and ethological needs. Such conditions will enable health and welfare maintenance, as well as expected production and milk quality.
