Adaptation and validation of the LIST-inventory of students learning strategies

Sažetak

Over the last three decades, researchers focusing on cognitive learning theory have increasingly recognized learner's active role in the process of learning. In this context, the crucial role of learning strategies was obtained. Oxford (1990) defines learning strategies as "operations used by learner to aid the acquisition, storage, or retrieval of information". She states that learning strategies are "specific actions taken by the learner to make learning easier, faster, more enjoyable, more self-directed, more effective, and more transferable to new situations".

Wild and Schiefele (1994) have developed an inventory for measuring learning strategies – "Inventars zur Erfassung von Lernstrategien im Studium" (LIST). The questionnaire consists of cognitive strategies scales (Organization, Elaboration - forming relations, Elaboration – critical thinking and Rehearsal), metacognitive strategies (Self-Monitoring, Regulation and Planning), internal resource management scales (Concentration, Effort Regulation and Time Organization) and external resource management scales (Study Environment, Peer Learning and Literature).

The main purpose of this research was to adapt and validate the LIST for the Croatian population. A sample of 411 students participated in this study (different years and different study groups) from the Faculty of Philosophy in Zadar.

The factor analysis of Croatian version of LIST showed factor structure similar to the one found in the original questionnaire. In addition, four new subscales were formed from the items which Wild and Schiefele (1994) have dropped out. All subscales in the questionnaire had satisfactory internal reliability (type Cronbach-alpha). In sum, it seems that LIST could be a useful instrument for measuring students' learning strategies although further testing of psychometric features is required.
