Parish Catechesis – Community Catechesis. Indispensability of Pastoral-Catechetic Reconsideration

Sažetak
The indispensability of a new, more systematic consideration of the process of religious education at all levels is lately becoming more and more obvious in the Church of Croatia. While a great consideration has been dedicated to religious education in schools, there is a lack of adequate endeavor to carry out the high standard religious socialization in the family, especially when it comes to parish catechesis. Although the document of the Croatian Bishops’ Conference “Parish Catechesis in the Renewal of the Parish Community” (2000) has given new, in many aspects original starting points for parish catechesis under new circumstances, we can’t say that the document has found a powerful response in parishes, nor that an appropriate debate about the document has ever taken place. In the meantime certain changes have taken place in the evangelizational – catechetic paradigm through which one becomes a Christian, not by one’s heritage but by one’s own choice. The rising alertness shows that it’s time for some steps to be taken to increase the awareness in the parish of its own responsibility, i.e. that a parish is a subject and an object of catechesis, the one which catechizes and the one which is being catechized. This will finally triumph over the ‘old praxis’ according to which catechesis is often related to children and the youth, and not primarily to adults. Certainly, for this to happen we need a considerable restructuring of the parish community for which the Croatian Bishops’ Conference’s document provides concrete guidelines. This presumes the necessity of a more meticulous pastoral-catechetic prementalization, primarily at the level of the catechetical leader, i.e. parish priest and all the persons responsible for a different functioning of the process: how to become and stay a Christian in the modern world? This is even more compulsory because of the relativism manifested in the increasing individualism and indifference and in a certain hardly explainable apathy along with a lack of willingness.
