Abstract

The paper presents the functioning of the Slavonian and Petrinian Border (also referred to as the Slavonian Border or the Generalcy of Varaždin) in the 17th century. It reconstructs its administrative and territorial organization, the branches of the standing armed forces, the quantity of the military and their ranks and salaries. It compares the 17th century development with the situation in the 16th century in order to reconstruct the tendencies in tactical and strategic development of the Habsburg military forces on the "Militärgrenze" (Military Border, Military Frontier).
