The distant genetic relatedness of languages

Sažetak

In this paper a new m ethod for assessing the distant genetic relatedness o f languages
is proposed, and applied to three “Nostratic” protolanguages. However,
the statistical analysis o f sound correspondences in the reconstructed basic
vocabularies of PIE, Uralic, and Kartvelian protolanguages shows that the distribution
o f probabilities o f those correspondences does not differ significantly
from the expected distribution of probabilities of random correspondences.
