Sažetak

This paper presents the current situation regarding counterfeiting currency in Croatia and the impact of six neighboring countries on the quantity and quality of counterfeit euros registered in Croatia. It also analyzes the potential threats linked with the dissemination of counterfeit money that can be expected after Croatia enters the Economic and Monetary Union, i.e., as it comes closer to introducing the new national currency. The conducted analysis compares the impact of counterfeit currencies on several Central European countries before the euro was introduced as the national currency, and comparisons are also made with EU members that have recently introduced the euro. The current situation in Croatia regarding counterfeiting and dissemination of counterfeit currency is not troublesome. Potential threats come from counterfeit euros, which exceed the registered amount of counterfeit kunas both in quality and quantity. Experiences from other countries show that the amount of counterfeit euros in circulation can be expected to grow during the years of introduction of the euro and subsequently. The paper proposes measures for a sustainable system of ongoing user training.
