As a part of a journal masterplan, set up by the Editorial Office of the scientific and professional journal Acta stomatologica Croatia, online presence of the journal was planned. Since publishing is supported by the Ministry of Science, Education and Sport, we decided that it should be an open-access journal, available for the widest interest group. Since spring 2005 it has been ten years and it is important to mark this jubilee with some words. Thanks to younger colleagues that are very skilled with computers, ASCRO Online started shyly, but grew on daily basis and developed into a recognizable trademark of the School of Dental Medicine University of Zagreb, Croatian Dental Association of the CMA, and whole academic community in biomedicine. Although its tradition in the printed form is long, the electronic version was well accepted and significantly increased its reading. It is at best represented with numerical data that shows that the first issue was seen two thousand times. Ten years later, there are 40 electronic issues on the homepage (ascro.hr) and on the Croatian scientific journals portal (http://hrcak.srce.hr/acta-stomatol-croat). Editorial office has digitalized all published articles so that on Hrčak all articles since 1966 are available. In ten years there were 297 thousand visitors on the ASCRO Online webpage (until May 21 2015). Today, we have a special program that follows who, and from where, is reading the journal. EBSCO indexation shows that most of our readers are from the USA. Index and citation database SCOPUS enabled even better visibitily and accessibility. Domestic readers are always under 30%, mostly from great university centers.
For more than a year, ASCRO is part of CrossRef, so articles receive DOI signatures (DOI: asc10.5644). We are also using CrossCheck service that enables the originality check of every submitted paper. All this data leads to continuous progress and greater recognizability of the journal. It encourages us to continue in the direction that was planned. It should be followed in a way that we shall publish quality material based on original data. Maybe some day we will outgrow our vision!
