Abstract

The optical properties of high quality BiI3 films were investigated near the fundamental absorption edge. The absorption coefficient near the absorption edge is well described by Urbach's rule. The large peak near 2.0 eV is ascribed to direct excitonic transition near the edge. The absorption bands at 2.03 eV and 2.39 eV are attributed to the spin-orbit splitting of the low energy iodine doublet.
