Abstract

A rotational pyrometer for high precision relative temperature change measurements is proposed. The system employs a magnetically suspended ferromagnetic sphere as the rotor whose angular speed decay ratio is measured as a function of rotor temperature. Competing effects are discussed, and calculations of the system's predicted sensitivity are given. Preliminary work on a magnetic suspension system for use in this experiment is reported, along with isothermal rotor decay ratio data from a previous experiment. Data on the case of interest, i. e., for a nonisothermal rotor are not yet available and will be presented later.
