Oxygen interaction with metal surfaces: surface science approach

Abstract
A description of the so-called „surface science approach“ to systematic studies of oxygen adsorption and surface oxidation is presented by giving a brief review of the use of surface sensitive techniques such as Auger Electron Spectroscopy, Photoelectron Spectroscopy, Low Energy Electron Diffraction and Thermal Desorption Spectrometry in order to study the geometric and electronic structure of chemisorbed oxygen as well as surface oxide layers. Representative results are discussed (in the order of increasing complexity) for single-crystal single-component surfaces, single¬-crystal binary alloy surfaces, polycristalline single-component surfaces and polycrystalline binary alloy surfaces. New results for the interaction of oxygen with a polycrystalline palladium foil are included in the discussion.
