Jean-Franҫ, Franҫisque, Millet - A Double Enigma: Discovering the Journey of His Two Versions of Classical Landscape

Sažetak
Despite the fact that Jean-François Francisque Millet was considered in his time, and the centuries to come, one of the best landscape painters of his generation, he remained unjustly overshadowed by his paragon and predecessor Nicolas Poussin and his work was often mistaken for the landscapes of the other, or another, slightly older colleague, Gaspard Dughet. This level of “neglect” for the life and oeuvre of Jean-François Francisque Millet (1642-1680), is greatly due, respectively, to the brevity of his life and the sparseness of documentation he left behind. As if the artist enigma was not enough, this article would aim to unravel an even more complex, dual enigma, of an artist and his two landscapes: one version is kept in the collections of the Alte Pinakothek in Munich, Classical Landscape (inv. no. 1018), while the other is in the holdings of the State Art Collection in Belgrade, Landscape with Two Classical Figures and a Beggar (inv. no. 242/01), both dated in the 1660s. While the Munich picture, as we shall elaborate further, was on public display almost from the beginning of the 18th century; the Belgrade version could be rightfully named a “sleeper,” a picture that remained forgotten and overlooked for centuries.
